You know an event is going to be amazing when the first song to blast out of the speakers is “Your Love” by The Outfield. Throw in pizza, trivia, frozen custard, crafts, plus a workout, and it’s just a downright epic party! Ample Hills, one of my favorite ice cream spots in New York City, combines them all together for their monthly (sometimes twice a month) Ice Cream Socials. I was lucky enough to attend a few weeks ago!
The Ample Hills location on Nevins Street in Brooklyn is huge! The downstairs is divided between the store and the kitchen (which has tons of windows so you can watch the magic happen). The second floor is split into a party room and a spacious rooftop patio. Since we arrived a bit early, we grabbed a seat and admired the view.
If you aren’t a child at heart, there is no need to attend. Upon arrival, the party room was set up with fun hats, crayons, temporary tattoos, and Ample Hills coloring sheets. There were even children’s books dedicated to ice cream on every table. Don’t be mistaken though – this event was adults-only as attendees were encouraged to bring their own alcohol.
The event began with a brief history of Ample Hills with the co-founder, Jackie Cuscuna. We discussed the five main ingredients to making ice cream (Did you know air is the most important ingredient?!) and then we all got to take a ride on the most magical contraption – a stationary bicycle that churns ice cream as the rider pedals! I mean, if only SoulCycle bikes could do that!
All that cardio worked up an appetite. Thankfully, Ample Hills thought ahead. Pizza was provided for everyone. These people really know the way to my heart!
While the toppings were being prepared, we played a fun game of trivia. Though trivia is my jam, my table, Team Udderly Awesome, came in last place surprisingly. I guess we need to spend more time learning facts about ice cream and less time eating it…
To cap off the evening, we all got to make our own ice cream sundaes. We were each given a bowl of the vanilla frozen custard we churned paired with a waffle (so good!). We added our own toppings.
Of course, I added a little bit of everything – chocolate sprinkles, ooey gooey cake, peanut butter cups, Oreo’s, and hot fudge. #DontJudgeMe
How did I hear about this amazing event and how can you attend the next one, you ask?
One of my SurfYogaBeer run club pal’s recently introduced me to Brooklyn Brainery, a website featuring a variety of classes, tours, and get-togethers around New York City. The majority of the events are geared toward learning a new skill. They have every topic you can imagine from how to save for your child’s college tuition to the history of pancakes. The price per class ranges from about $10-$40. I saw the Ample Hills Ice Cream Social advertised and knew I had to attend. Unfortunately, the next Ample Hills Ice Cream Social is already sold out, but be sure to keep a look out for future dates. This is not something to be missed, you guys!
Stay fit and fabulous (but enjoy a good bowl of ice cream from time to time…),
