Gone are the days of scheduling as many classes as possible on Tuesdays and Thursdays to maximize our time off. (Cherish it while you can, college kids!) Saturdays and Sundays are precious as an adult. It’s our time to relax, recharge, and have some fun. I love to travel though which means I try to squeeze in some trips into those two days (sometimes three) when I can. Trying to make the most out of 48-72 hours can become stressful if you don’t plan ahead though! Whether it’s a race weekend at Walt Disney World, a wedding weekend in another town, or a fun Memorial Day Weekend, I’ve become a pro at planning quick trips. Here are my tips for getting the most out of your weekend getaway:
Do Your Research: This tip is obvious, but having a solid list of places you want to see, visit, eat at, etc. will be extremely helpful in the planning process. I love flipping through a good travel guide and also asking friends for their recommendations. Check out travel blogs and apps like FourSquare to see what the locals are lovin’ too.
Map It Out: Pull up a map of the city you’re visiting and mark the places you want to see and the restaurants you want to eat at. This will give you a better idea of what is near what. From there, you can cluster places together and schedule your time in those areas better. A map of Washington, D.C. came with my travel book, and I literally starred our must-see museums, landmarks, and restaurants, for our trip. Not only did this help us figure out what places we were walking to vs. taking the Metro to, but I also have record of what areas/places we missed so we can check them out during our next adventure to our nation’s capital.
Purchase Tickets In Advance: If possible, purchase your tickets online before your trip. It will help you schedule your days better. It will save you time from having to wait in long lines at popular tourist destinations. Lastly, it can potentially save you a few bucks since museums and landmarks usually give a discount for purchasing tickets online.
The Early Bird Gets The Worm: I know it’s vacation, but get up and out the door early. This allows you to see the city when it’s quite (my favorite time to walk around NYC is at 7am on a Sunday) and get a few extra hours of sightseeing in. It can also be a good excuse to hit up a local coffee shop for some caffeine!
Take A Tour: I know tours seem cheesy, but they are an awesome way to see tons of landmarks in a short amount of time. My favorite part of taking a tour is all the random facts tour guides share. I walk away from tours feeling ready to dominate at Jeopardy!
Go With The Flow: As you can see, I’m obsessed with planning and mapping out every single minute of a trip. It makes me feel as though I’m getting the most out of my time. I rarely cross off everything on my list though, but I like having the options. Having said that, go with the flow. It’s probably the most important tip in this post! Recently, on my way home from a bachelorette party in Florida, my travel time (which should’ve been about 7 hours) turned into a 22 hour issue – including spending the night at the Charlotte airport. It was insane! Plus – on our way back from D.C., our train stopped in Baltimore because of an earlier train accident. We ended up sharing an Uber ride back to NYC with five strangers. Surprisingly, it ended up being an awesome road trip! While these situations could (and did!) have others in an angry panic, I just chilled out and went along for the ride. I suggest you do the same if things don’t go as planned…
