Way back in my middle school days, we spent a week or two out of the school year learning how to fence in P.E. with foam sabers. I absolutely loved it, so naturally I immediately registered when I heard free fencing classes are being offered in Bryant Park on Fridays all summer long.
Classes meet from 1:30-2:30pm on the grass to the left of the New York Public Library entrance (if facing the library from 5th Avenue). For those interested in joining, I suggest registering one week prior to the Friday you want to attend so as to guarantee a space (though walk-ins are welcome if there are last minute no-shows). I’d also recommend wearing workout clothes since you’re gonna sweat!
Instruction and equipment are provided by the Manhattan Fencing Center. (This fitness center has three students on the 2016 Olympic Team – Monika Aksamit, Daryl Homer, and Dagmara Wozniak!) I found the fencing class in Bryant Park really informative and a blast to participate in! I’m pretty sure I had a smile on my face the entire class (though it was mostly hidden by the fencing mask…).
Have you ever tried fencing? What is the most unique fitness class you’ve ever taken? Let me know in the comments below!
Stay fit and fabulous,
