A while back my friend, Danielle, and I met up for a Girl’s Night Out at SURFSET NYC. SURFSET is a workout inspired by surfing – great for anyone who has always wanted to sign up for a surf camp in Costa Rica or San Diego! Or anyone who just wants a surfer’s body! I’ve never had the opportunity to attempt to surf unfortunately, so I was really looking forward to getting a little taste of riding waves during this class!
SURFSET NYC is located in the East Village in Manhattan – its only downside. (At least for me since it’s a trek from my Upper West Side apartment.) The space isn’t anything fancy. It just includes the studio itself and a restroom. The studio has lots of tropical murals and even a video of people surfing projected onto the wall to get participants into the surfer mindset!
Our class was tiny with only about thirteen people of which half were first timers. Our instructor, Aaron, was awesome! He made sure us newbies felt comfortable and knew what to expect throughout class without dumbing it down for those who were SURFSET regulars.
Choreographed to songs by The Killers, Phantom Planet, The Beach Boys and more, the class was a mix of cardio and strength training – all while balancing on our SURFSET boards (a “surfboard” attached to the top of three squishy balance balls by resistance cords). The workout was no joke! I was out of breath with sweat dripping down my face before the class was even halfway over. Though my muscles were burning, I had a goofy smile on my face the entire class because SURFSET was such a fun and unique experience. I definitely recommend trying it out if you have a location in your area. It’s even on ClassPass!
