Last weekend, Nick and I ventured to the Lower East Side to hit up Pies ‘n’ Thighs, a famous fried chicken joint in New York City. Nick’s goal was to try chicken & waffles for the first time while I was just hoping for some delicious comfort food.
The first thing I noticed upon arrival was that the restaurant was a lot smaller than I imagined it would be. Now, I understand why they normally have a long wait (plus they don’t take reservations)! There are probably twenty tables at most (the majority being two-seaters) and some bar seating. We were seated in the back, and we had to pull the table out and over every time I took a seat or got up.
While I studied the menu for days, I still couldn’t decide what to get when it came time to order! My FourSquare app said the chicken biscuits and doughnuts are the must-try items on the menu. I was hoping to be a little healthy though (not going to happen at Pies ‘n’ Thighs!), but everything sounded so delicious! I ended up ordering the Superbowl, which includes three side items and either a biscuit or cornbread. I got a drumstick (for a $1 extra), green salad, grits, and a biscuit. Nick ordered his chicken & waffles. We shared fried pickles and macaroni & cheese.
During our meal, an odd smell filled the restaurant. We couldn’t figure out what it was from, as it didn’t smell like smoke from the kitchen. We were later told that a shop above the restaurant occasionally burns incense and it wafts into the restaurant from time to time. It was odd, but it didn’t negatively affect our experience.
Our meals were absolutely wonderful!
Tip: If you are a fan of spicy food (like Nick is!), Pies ‘n’ Thighs is your kind of place as they cover almost everything in hot sauce. If you aren’t a fan of heat (like me!), be sure to check the menu so you can ask that they don’t include hot sauce on your plate. It didn’t cross my mind while ordering, and hot sauce ended up on my grits and the macaroni & cheese. The horror!
Though I can’t eat all that cheese, sugar, and fried breading regularly, Pies ‘n’ Thighs is a fun place to go for some Southern-style cooking every so often. We will definitely be back next time we get a craving for comfort foods.
Let me know your go-to comfort food in the comments below!
Stay fit and fabulous,
A
