When my mom and grandmother came to visit over the holidays, I created an itinerary filled with New York City adventures from a Broadway show to walking the Brooklyn Bridge. My mom had one thing she wanted to cross off her bucket list though – tea at the Plaza Hotel.
The Plaza Hotel is a New York City landmark. Maybe due to it’s gorgeous interior or it’s awesome location (right off Fifth Avenue and the tip of Central Park), the Plaza has been been named in numerous pop culture references from The Great Gatsby to Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Oddly enough, I didn’t really have a desire to dine there especially after I saw the $70 per person price tag for afternoon tea. It didn’t seem worth it. But, that all changed once we walked in…
The Plaza Hotel was beautifully decorated with Christmas trees and garland. It also wasn’t crowded as the security team wouldn’t let visitors in unless they had a room key or restaurant reservation. It was fancy yet inviting. All of this added to the elegance and excitement of our afternoon plans.
Surprisingly, the three of us were each given our own pot of black tea which I drank with sugar for the sole reason that there was a dish of adorable sugar cubes on our table. Since my mom decided to also get a glass of rosé then I did too. You only live once, right?
We also each got an individual stand of sandwiches, scones, and desserts. I was in awe of the delicious treats and the beautiful presentation!
I had a smile on my face during our entire lunch. In fact, the Plaza Hotel’s Palm Court is probably filled with smiles all the time. I saw young girls celebrating birthdays and women toasting to recent engagements. I saw couples enjoying a fun day date and families experiencing quality time together.
While I went into it thinking tea at the Plaza Hotel wasn’t something I would enjoy, I left realizing it was one of my favorite NYC experiences. It obviously isn’t an everyday kind of spot, but it’s definitely a special place to grab a drink and celebrate at least once in a lifetime. I cannot wait to return – maybe for my 30th birthday in 362 days!
Stay fit and fabulous,
A
