La Tarte Flambee is a secret, little gem tucked away in the Manhattan neighborhood of Murray Hill. Nick and I recently had dinner there (Okay, a few dinners there!), and I still can’t stop thinking about its delicious food and charm. While the restaurant has two adorable, tiny tables out front which are perfect for people watching along the street, we enjoy the tables in the back courtyard. This open space is hidden amongst brownstone apartment buildings. With the backyard patio filled with the sounds of oldies music and the splashing water from the fountain, we almost forget that we are dining in the middle of New York City.
While I rarely drink alcohol, Nick and I decided to toast to the weekend and the beautiful weather with a beer and a Bellini during a recent visit.
Besides the hidden oasis in the back, my favorite part of this restaurant is the signature dish – the tarte flambee (Or the “flammy” if we are being less formal). These dishes are similar to flatbread pizzas but thinner, or as one customer described them – they are as if a pizza and a crepe had a baby! The dough is rolled out thin, creme fraiche is spread all over, and it’s finished off with whatever toppings one might desire. During each visit, I’ve gotten the tarte flambee with chicken, caramelized onions, and mozzarella cheese. I know I should branch out, but it is just so yummy!
Nick, on the other hand, ordered their All-You-Can-Eat special where you can try as many tarte flambees as you can eat (plus a beer!) for $25.95. This includes a miniature dessert flambee, so it’s a great way to try lots of options on the menu. Plus, you get your money’s worth after just the beer and two flambees!
While I like sticking to the tarte flambee, Nick has also tried the Alsatian potato salad topped with salmon. I think the All-You-Can-Eat special is his go-to from now on though…
Obviously, the dessert tarte flambee is my new favorite dish. Apples, bananas, and strawberries! Oh my!
