Don’t worry, folks! Heaven does exist and it is located on the Upper West Side. I sort of have an unofficial restaurant bucket list going, and since the weather was absolutely beautiful this weekend, I decided to take a stroll to the closest location from my list. Say Cheese, located on West 83rd Street between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues, is a “Farm to Table” restaurant that serves gourmet comfort foods.
From the old fashioned metal advertisement signs hanging on the brick walls to the paper straws they put in guests’ mason jars, this restaurant exudes charm. My only regret as I walked through the door was that I didn’t invite someone to join me on this food adventure!
While small, the menu has a variety of options like mini corn dogs, soups, macaroni and cheese, and more. All of these wash down nicely with one of their refreshing lemonades. While the choice was tough, I ended up ordering the Swiss/Gruyere/apple compote grilled cheese sandwich on Tuscan bread ($9.25) and the salted caramel/chocolate milkshake ($8.00).
My milkshake arrived first, and I was instantly sold on the place. It is probably the most delicious thing I’ve ever put in my mouth! #truth They topped it with whipped cream and caramel popcorn which I thought gave it a really nice (and yummy!) touch.
My sandwich was wonderful too. Some people don’t like apples on anything other than salads, but I happen to love it on pizza and cheese quesadillas. This grilled cheese sandwich was no exception! The apple compote and cheeses balance each other nicely. I completely devoured my entire order in record time. (My friends know eating faster than a glacial pace is no easy task for me…)
While I love this restaurant, there are a couple downsides. First, Say Cheese is only open on weekends except for private events. Second, they only except cash. I don’t know about you, but I rely heavily on my debit card. Thankfully, I had enough cash on me that day, but I did see a family walk out to head to an ATM machine down the street. Fortunately for their taste buds, they did return for lunch!
What is your favorite comfort food? While this grilled cheese was fabulous, macaroni and cheese is still my number one. Let me know yours in the comments below!
Stay fit and fabulous,
