On the second day of the Reebok Women’s Fitness and Lifestyle Event, we participated in walking and running. After the first day of CrossFit, yoga, and dance, I was looking forward to Day 2. While Day 1’s activities were fairly new and exciting, I was ready to put on my walking and running shoes. They are like my security blankets or comfort foods. Day 1 was gray and rainy, but Day 2 was full of sunshine – the perfect day for some outdoor activities!
First, we took to the High Line (one of my favorite places ever!) with celebrity fitness trainer and Reebok Walking Ambassador, Amy Dixon. Before we got started on our mile journey along the renovated rail tracks, she spoke with us about walking as a way to stay fit. In the United States, most people don’t think of walking as exercise. The opposite is true in other countries around the world. People are walking more and more whether it be to connect with nature or with others.
While walking seems natural, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you wouldn’t play basketball with a soccer ball, so you should walk in sneakers made specifically for walking. If you are walking for fitness, be sure to walk with a purpose as if you were ten minutes late to a meeting. Amy also advises to drive with your arms, strike with the heel of your foot, and push off. Easy enough, right?
As I mentioned in my previous posts, I was the only American in my group. Because of this, we incorporated some sightseeing into our walking workout (i.e. we stopped for some photo breaks along the way). No complaints here! Amy also had us stop for some mini-strength training workouts. We stopped to do planks, chair sits, and step-ups using benches along the path. This is a great way to switch up a routine!
Usually when we walk we have a destination in mind. Walking is the perfect way to stay active especially if you have a busy schedule. You can fit it into your daily routine in small chunks. For example, when I worked at a law firm, I would walk a mile and a half to the courthouse during my lunch break. Not only was I doing something great for my health, but I also enjoyed that time because I could escape the office to be outside in the sun.
How can you incorporate more walking into your routine? Let me know in the comments below! And don’t forget to check out Reebok’s walking apparel and shoes. Their Fall/Winter 2013 collection is available now!
Stay fit and fabulous,
