I was really excited to have my running analyzed at the Runner’s World Half and Festival Expo because I’ve wanted to get it done for a while now. Unfortunately, I ended up learning that I have horrible running form right before my three races! This post might be pointless to others, but I hope that someone finds it a little helpful if he or she has a similar running style.
As you can see from the video, they took footage from the front, side, and back of the treadmill while I ran using a GoPro camera. These three clips actually taught me a lot:
1. I’m a heal striker. This isn’t horrible, but it definitely puts extra pressure on my knees.
2. My legs swing out each time I take a step. (This was big news to me!)
3. I run with a supermodel walk – one leg directly in front of the other.
4. My lower leg hits in a different direction than my upper leg which means my joint is unaligned. This is why I get knee pain after 7 miles.
Because of this, I need arch support and stable shoes. Below is a list of good shoe choices if you have similar problems:
Other than than buying the best shoes, I can only fix this problem by consciously thinking about my form as I run. This should make for an interesting last ten weeks of training…
