So number 50 on my top 50 things to do in 100 days was to be an extra on The Vampire Diaries for their upcoming season (season 3!). I think I was looking around on random websites when I found an ad wanting new TVD extras. I ended up sending in my info (height, age, weight, pictures, etc) to the casting director. A few days later I received an email asking if I was available to work on a certain day. I said YES! and that started my “career” as an extra on TVD. Unfortunately, last season I was student teaching and could only do it on school breaks. Because of that I was only able to do it 4 times, while some people were able to do it every single time they needed extras because that is their job! How cool would that be?!
As a job, you don’t get paid much. Only $56 and then $12/hr after the first 8 hours. They do treat their extras really well compared to other shows like Teen Wolf or Big Momma’s House from what I hear on set. For example, when I arrived there on Monday they had a delicious breakfast for us (my call time was 6am!). They had a variety of cereals to choose from, cheese eggs, oatmeal, sausage, hashbrowns, danishes, milk, and OJ. That’s making your mouth water already, isn’t it?! Lunch was just as good! We had salad, fruit, pasta, fish, bbq chicken, chocolate cake, sweet tea, lemonade, bread, rice, veggies, baked beans…I think that’s everything ;o) Doesn’t sound half bad, right?
Anyway- now on to the good part! So to be an extra you have to sign a confidentiality agreement type thing, so we can’t take pictures (so none of these behind the scene pics are mine…just ones I found online…actually they aren’t even from this episode) or give away any juicy details (for example: I knew from filming the season two finale that Jenna died before it actually aired! Everyone was quietly like OMG?! when we heard that one! Have to keep it quiet though.) But it has already been posted on different sites such as TVGuide.com that season 3 begins with Elena’s 18th birthday party AND that was the scene I got to film! I know, I died too! We had to bring party clothes for the scene so we knew it was going to be for Elena’s birthday. What we didn’t know was that we got to film at the Salvatore mansion- where no extras have ever gone before! Too cool!
I think this is by far my favorite time filming. I hope all of the scenes I think I am in make it into the show. (That is a downside- you think the camera is right on you for a scene and then you watch it with your family and realize they cut it out.) In one scene I was shoved by Caroline, so I hope I at least make it onto the show with that scene. They also did a big reveal of Elena coming down the stairs for her party, and I got to be one person that wishes her a happy birthday and she talked back to me. I really hope that makes it, but they did a lot of takes with different versions so I am not going to get my hopes up. It was still a cool experience though.
Another neat thing was that there were some photographers from Entertainment Weekly taking random photos of the sets, actors, and even the extras! I don’t know what they are doing exactly with the photos, but how cool would it be if I made the magazine or website?! I’d die!…and also purchase every copy I could get a hold of even if I was only a centimeter tall in the whole magazine. I bet the pictures won’t come out until September since September 15 is when the show returns to TV. That seems like ages away, doesn’t it?! Blah!
Overall, I really enjoy being an extra in my free time. I get a kick out of the fact that some of the people that do it for a living and are trying to make it big seem to hate being there sometimes or complain about the food or having to do another take. Maybe because I’m new and I see it like a little kid looking at the world, but I think it is an amazing experience. Actually, one of the pictures that the Entertainment Weekly photographers took was of the extras resting while they filmed the scene from a different camera view. I saw him take the picture of us while I was sitting on the ground peeking around a hall table just in awe of them filming this scene. I look behind me and everyone else looks so bored and tired LOL. If that’s really what he took it of, I wish I could get a copy of that picture! How anyone could ever get tired of stunts and the “movie magic” and just being able to say “I’m on set” is beyond me?! I don’t think I ever will get tired of it. I hope I can do this forever…so please stick around TVD! I’m having too much fun!
Watch season 3 premiering September 15 on the CW at 8pm to find out:
– Does Jeremy see dead people?
– Are Elena and Damon a couple now that Stefan is out of the picture? We can only hope!
– Will someone save Stefan from being a (human) blood thirsty monster?
– Will Caroline and Tyler get together? (I’ll never tell… ;o)
– Will Jeremy being “haunted” by his ex-girlfriends hurt his new relationship with Bonnie who confessed her love for him in the season finale as he was dying?!
– What kind of town lets high school students (aka: Elena and Jeremy) live in a house with no guardians?! Well I guess the answer to that is already known- Mystic Falls, but you get the point! So much to uncover is season 3!
